Note: the room images in this guide are design visualisations created to show how each tile reads on a fireplace, not photographs of finished installations.
A fireplace is one of the few walls in a room that everyone looks at. Tiling the surround or the full chimney breast is a straightforward way to give it a finished, deliberate look, and the tile you choose sets the whole mood: slim handmade brick for warmth, crackle glaze for a bit of depth, large-format for something calm and modern. This guide walks through the fireplace tile styles we see most often and the GleamRock series that suit each one, with notes on format, colour and what to confirm before you order.
Where fireplace tile goes, and why format matters
On a fireplace you are usually tiling one of three areas: the surround (the frame immediately around the opening), the chimney breast (the full wall above and around it), or a raised or floating hearth. The bigger the area, the more the tile format changes the feel of the room.
Slim, long formats such as our 40x250mm handmade brick or the 460x55mm clay brick draw the eye sideways and suit a horizontal, stacked or running-bond layout. Square formats such as 150x150mm crackle or 200x200mm Castle Series read as a quieter grid. There is no single right answer, but a taller chimney breast often looks balanced with a horizontal brick, while a compact surround can carry a square tile without feeling busy. Larger tiles also mean fewer grout lines, which reads as calmer; smaller tiles give you more grout lines and a more textured, handmade look.
Handmade brick: a warm, textured surround

Our Handmade Kiln-fired Brick is a slim 40x250mm format sold per square meter (100 pieces). The Deep Forest Green N42503 finish gives a fireplace surround a rich, saturated colour with the subtle variation you get from a handmade, kiln-fired tile, so no two pieces are identical. Run horizontally across a chimney breast it stretches the wall visually; stacked vertically it draws the eye up. The slim proportion is what makes it read as "brick" rather than standard wall tile.
Pure white brick: bright and Scandinavian

The same 40x250mm handmade brick in Pure White N42501 is the version to reach for when you want the fireplace to feel light rather than heavy. Against pale walls and light timber it almost disappears into the room, letting the texture and the slim brick proportion do the work. It pairs naturally with a wood-stove insert and a simple timber mantel. Because it is a handmade finish, expect gentle tone and surface variation across the square meter rather than a flat, uniform white.
Long clay brick: rustic and tactile

Our Long Clay Brick Tiles in the TTZ-460 Series are a 460x55mm format in a Warm Sandy Beige stone-aggregate finish, sold per square meter. The long, low proportion and the natural aggregate surface give a fireplace a grounded, rustic character that works well with a solid timber mantel and natural materials. The warm beige is an easy neutral that sits comfortably in both traditional and pared-back modern rooms.
Crackle glaze: depth on a feature wall

For a fireplace feature wall with more depth, the Ice Crack Ceramic Tile in 150x150mm (N-BL-1506, Deep Green Crackle Glaze) adds a fine crackle pattern across the glaze that catches the light differently as you move around the room. The 150mm square works as a tight, even grid and the deep green reads as refined rather than loud. It suits a slim linear fireplace and a restrained, modern scheme where the tile is the main event.
Castle Series: a calm, modern grid

The Castle Series in 200x200mm (MD22C18) is the choice for a quieter, more contemporary surround. The larger square means fewer grout lines and a calmer wall, which lets a floating hearth and simple furniture carry the room. It is the most understated of the options here and the easiest to live with if you want the fireplace to feel built-in rather than decorative.
Choosing by the look you want
- Warm and traditional: Deep Forest Green or Warm Sandy Beige brick, run horizontally with a timber mantel.
- Light and modern: Pure White handmade brick or the 200x200mm Castle Series.
- A feature wall with depth: Deep Green crackle glaze in a tight 150mm grid.
- Rustic and tactile: the long 460x55mm clay brick in its natural aggregate finish.
What to check before you order
A fireplace surround has requirements an ordinary wall does not, so a few things are worth confirming with your installer and with us before you buy:
- Heat and clearances: confirm the required non-combustible clearances around your specific firebox or stove with your installer and local code. We do not publish heat-rating figures for these tiles, so do not assume a tile is suitable right up to the opening without that check.
- Quantity: these series are sold per square meter. Measure the surround or chimney breast and add the usual allowance for cuts and waste.
- Colour and texture variation: the handmade and kiln-fired finishes vary piece to piece by design. Order from one batch and dry-lay before fixing.
- Substrate: larger formats such as the 200x200mm Castle Series need a flat, sound substrate to sit well.
Order a sample first
Colour and surface texture are hard to judge on screen, especially for a handmade or crackle finish that changes with the light. We offer samples so you can see the tile against your own room and firebox before committing to a full square-meter order. Request the finishes you are weighing up and compare them in daylight and in the evening by the fire.
Get a project quote
Once you have measured your surround and chosen a finish, send us the square meterage and your location and we will put together a quote, including sample dispatch. If you are a trade buyer or specifying for a client, tell us the project scope and we will work to it.
